Check this Dolly Par

Check this Dolly Parton story about the tracking of Dolly’s “9 to 5” hit recorded at the Record Plant Studios in 1980. #musicicons #musichistory #omegaliveproductionsOn March 6, 1980, singer-songwriter Dolly Parton arrived at the Record Plant recording studio in Los Angeles, California, to continue tracking vocal sessions for her eleventh solo studio album, 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs. Joining producer Gary Klein and audio engineer Judy Clapp inside the control room, Parton sought to compose a theme song for her upcoming feature film debut in the 20th Century Fox comedy 9 to 5, co-starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Sitting alongside Clapp near the multi-track mixing console, Parton improvised rhythm patterns by tapping her long acrylic fingernails together, generating a distinct clicking sound that mimicked the rapid clack of office typewriters. Recognizing the unique percussion quality of the sound, Parton used the improvised fingernail rhythm to structure the syncopated tempo for the title track, "9 to 5," writing the lyrics and melody across consecutive studio working sessions. Clapp recorded the tracking sessions onto analog magnetic tape, adjusting micro-level control dials on the large recording console as Parton ran through vocal takes in the booth. Studio photographers visiting the control room documented the creative collaboration, capturing candid photographs of Parton wearing a floral tied blouse, blue jeans, and styled blonde curls while standing beside Clapp, who wore a patterned western-style jumpsuit featuring a press badge pinned to her lapel. On November 3, 1980, RCA Records released the single "9 to 5" ahead of the film's theatrical premiere, featuring Parton officially credited on the album liner notes with playing "acrylic nails" as an official percussive instrument. By February 1981, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and the Adult Contemporary chart, achieving a rare triple-chart victory. On February 24, 1982, at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Parton won two Grammy Awards for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female, and Best Country Song for "9 to 5." The master multi-track recording tapes, complete with the original acoustic tracking lines of Parton’s fingernail percussion, were permanently cataloged within the Sony Music Entertainment sound archives in New York City. Original 35mm color negatives from the 1980 Record Plant studio session showing Parton leaning against the mixing console next to Clapp remain preserved within the Michael Ochs Archives visual collection in Los Angeles, California.
