Gladys Maria Knight, born May 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress, widely known as the "Empress of Soul." She rose to fame as the lead singer of Gladys Knight & the Pips, a group formed with her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and cousins Edward Patten and William Guest. The group signed with Motown in 1966, achieving hits like “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (1967, number two on the Billboard Hot 100), “If I Were Your Woman” (1970), and their signature song, “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973), which topped the Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. With over 30 albums, the group earned seven Grammy Awards and sold millions of records before disbanding in 1989.

Knight launched a solo career with albums like Good Woman (1991) and Just for You (1994), earning a Grammy nomination for “I Don’t Want to Do Wrong.” She acted in films like Pipe Dreams (1976) and TV shows like The Jamie Foxx Show (1997), and appeared on Dancing with the Stars (2012). A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1997, she has directed a choir and released gospel albums. Knight was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Pips in 1996 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2021.
