Omega Productions recorded this concert at the iconic Nick’s Uptown Club in North Dallas, owned by John Kenyon, for a TV pilot. Omega’s President, Paul Christensen, engineered the concert and served as Audio Director. Clearwater Teleproductions, Dallas, TX, shot the concert.
Omega’s David Buell later mixed the soundtrack at Omega’s Love Field Studio Complex. The video was edited at Video Post and Transfer, at VP&T’s Dallas Love Field Editing Suites. Steve Moss produced the project.
The concert took place on October 31, 1981, and featured Texas Rock and Roots artist Joe Ely and Rockabilly icon Carl Perkins. This video features both artists and has become a favorite of fans over the years.
From a Dallas Morning News Article, December 2, 1981, by Nancy Bishop, “Nick’s Uptown, on lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas, opened its doors in November 1980. It had hoped to launch a weekly series called Live at Nick’s, according to Bishop. The first taped show at Nick’s Uptown was with rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins and Joe Ely. Bishop described Ely as Texas punk or New Wave country.”
Omega worked with Joy Ely on several other occasions, including the Texas Music Awards, the Tornado Jam in Lubbock, and a Willie Nelson Television Special.
John Kenyon was once known as “The Mayor of Greenville Avenue” during a fabled run that included ownership or co-ownership of Nick’s Uptown, the Fast and Cool Club, and the Red Jacket.
